Modern psychology made its first appearance on the opera stage with Richard Strauss’ masterpiece Salome. It is a short yet extremely powerful work; an inescapable lava flow of religion, sex and violence. The central character in Salome is the spoilt princess of Judea, who demands the head of John the Baptist if she cannot gain his love.
